With over 3 billion people on the Internet every month, there’s no question that it has become an integral part of many people’s lives. Whether they’re checking their email or surfing the web, people are constantly using the Internet to get things done.
If you haven’t used the Internet in a
while, or if you just want to learn some new tips and tricks to make your
experience even more efficient, then here are 10 tips and tricks everyone
should know.
1) How to screenshot on Mac
If you’re using MacOS, it’s easy to take screenshots. In fact, it’s built into macOS.
- On a keyboard without a PrtScn (Print Screen) key, press Shift+⌘+3 instead of PrtScn.
- A full-screen screenshot is saved in your desktop Downloads folder as a file named Screenshot (without an extension).
- If you want to copy that file on your Clipboard as well so you can easily paste it in an email or document, press ⌘+Shift+4 instead.
2) How to take a screenshot on iPhone
Taking a screenshot on your iPhone is easy! Just follow these steps.
- When you want to take a screenshot, press down on both Home and Sleep/Wake buttons at once for about 2 seconds.
- Then let go of both buttons when you see your screen flash white.
- The resulting image will be saved automatically in your Photos app, so you can share it with others or look back on it whenever you want.
3) Self-destructing messages are cool
Self-destructing messages are a pretty nifty way to protect yourself against snooping eyes.
- If you need something deleted from your phone, Self-destructing messages let you set an expiration date for any file.
- This is great if you don’t want a photo of last night’s dinner winding up on Facebook for all your friends to see.
- Just set a quick expiration date and know that your secrets will be safe in no time.
- It’s also important to remember that even self-deleting messages can be hacked—so use caution when sending private or sensitive data via SMS or email.
4) Hide photos in plain sight
Did you know that your Android phone has a built-in photo-hiding feature?
- Photos in plain sight is a clever, one-time use app that lets you hide pictures in photos.
- If someone else tries to access them on your phone, they’ll only see what appears to be a blank image.
- As soon as you access your private photos again, it will delete itself from your phone.
- It does have some limitations (you can only take photos with your front facing camera) but it’s an awesome trick for keeping certain information just between friends or family members.
5) An app shortcut for Google search
Whether you use it to search for nearby restaurants or seek out reviews for movies, Google search is one of our most frequently used apps. Luckily, there's an app shortcut for Google search.
- Simply go to Settings > Apps > Shortcuts. From there, select Google and choose Search, which will display a list of suggested phrases such as weather, or search history.
- You can also assign voice commands by tapping on OK Google.
- Once done, tap on Add in order to save your selection, then swipe left on your home screen to access the shortcut.
6) Bookmark any website with Pocket
For most people, bookmarking a website for later is as easy as clicking your browser's Bookmarks icon.
- But what if you're surfing with someone else's computer or you want to save something that can't be bookmarked?
- Use Pocket, a service that lets you save any web page to read later on your phone, tablet or computer.
- While it can seem like just another way to save things online, Pocket saves pages without an internet connection so they're always there when you need them.
- It also works with many social networks so you can share saved links with friends via Twitter or Facebook—meaning you'll never lose a link again. If anyone needs it!
7) Change your number when you don't want it used
If you don't want your number to be used, simply change it.
- Most phones have an option to create a new number that isn't linked to your contact information.
- Use it until you're comfortable sharing your actual number.
- If you are contacted by someone who has already gotten your new number, just say you were given a new phone at work or a friend gave it out.
- Take these excuses with a grain of salt (i.e., don't use them too much), but they're perfect for situations like when someone is asking for money or trying to scam you in some way.
- The easiest way not to lose touch with people you don't want to lose touch with—and not get scammed—is just keep your real number private as long as possible.
8) Stop autocorrect from being annoying
So, how do you stop autocorrect from being annoying?
- First, create a list of commonly misspelled words and put them into your phone’s dictionary.
- Second, make sure that under Settings>General>Keyboards you have Auto-Correction set to OFF.
- And third, turn off predictive text.
Finally (though we love autocorrect), learn how to manually change autocorrected words if they are not what you intended. If it helps, call them autocorrections 🙂
9) Add text without an account
You can also add text without an account.
- Just visit Google Text-to-Speech in your browser, select a language and start typing.
- Once you've finished your text it will be spoken out loud by an online voice (it even includes some background sounds).
The main advantage is that there's no account required, so everyone can use it!
10) Check the weather anywhere in the world
Weather is always changing. Check the weather anywhere in the world before you head out. Whether you’re headed to a new city or simply want to know what Mother Nature is throwing at your next vacation spot, there are multiple options for checking local weather—or checking an unfamiliar zip code in the area you’re in.
For example;
Weather Underground offers a detailed forecast that can be viewed by neighborhood or any location on Earth via desktop, mobile app or API.
